Social Adaptation and Ecological Restoration on the LA River | Thesis

Issues

The major loss of wetlands in California has led to mass water quality and habitat issues across the state. Channelization of rivers has become a growing ecological issue around the world with the Los Angeles river being one of the most egregious.

Concept

The landscape design is focused on knitting the river and the people around it back together while the architecture is focused on enhancing our connection to the river and the riparian ecosystems that follow. The architectural intervention aims to combine the lightness and delicacy of nature with that of architecture.

Experience

The buildings glide over constructed wetlands in the center of the river. Each Pavilion enhances the occupants connection to the wetlands encompassing them while also teaching the background and importance of them. The research labs expand out and around the Northern end of the island giving the researchers an semi-isolated area to conduct studies for the immediate area and broader LA river ecosystem.
