Seaholm Intake Station Re-Design Competition

Concept
The adaptive re-use project is respectful of the past history and character of the Seaholm Intake Station while exploring how to interject a modern, public architecture into the site. The architecture emphasizes the atmosphere of the building and provides ample spaces for events, exhibits, fitness, live music, and dining. The modern addition emphasizes the verticality of the existing Seaholm plant while the materiallity tries to complement, not copy, the heavy concrete. The "lantern" atop the structure acts as a beacon and establishes the building as a landmark in the urban fabric of the city. The piers reaching out into the lake provide a horizontal element allowing visitors to enjoy being by the water and in turn connected back to nature.
Form | Program
Food trucks were placed along Cesar Chavez to promote local business and attract pedestrians and runners to the adjacent tables and the generous tree canopies above. A small cut out in the street allows ease of vehicular access while the sign and planters provide a buffer from the street. The lawns around the site provide spaces for gathering, picnics, and outdoor recreation and is surrounded by event spaces for public speaking, education, and entertainment. To the South, an outdoor amphitheatre connects visitors to the site and lake and provides space for events.
Disclaimer
All changes to the site and structure were made to preserve and enhance the original architectures style while simultaneously promoting sustainable practices, public usage, and a deep rooted appreciation for nature. Water cisterns, bioswales, and native grassese provide habitat for wild life.
